Parameter Guide: How Each Limiter Control Works
Threshold (Input)
On this limiter, threshold defines the level above which limiting begins — conceptually the same starting point as a compressor's threshold, but here it feeds a fixed, effectively infinite ratio: nothing is allowed to pass above this level, it's brought back down to exactly the threshold value. Some limiters label this control "Input" instead, since lowering the threshold has practically the same effect as raising the input level driving into a fixed ceiling — both push more of the signal into the limiting zone.
Where to start: watch the purple zone on the input waveform. Set threshold low enough that the loudest peaks visibly cross into it — that's the amount of signal the limiter will actually be working on. Setting it too close to 0 dB means the limiter rarely engages; setting it very low means almost everything gets processed, which usually means heavy, audible gain reduction.
Output (Ceiling)
Output sets the ceiling: the maximum level the signal is allowed to reach after limiting, no matter how hard the input is driven. Internally, this tool derives the makeup gain automatically from the difference between Output and Threshold, so the signal that was pulled down to the threshold level gets pushed back up to sit exactly at the ceiling you've set.
Where to start: 0 dB gives you the maximum use of the available headroom — the loudest parts of the output will sit right at full scale. Lower it, to -1 or -2 dB for instance, if you specifically want some headroom left after limiting; watch the yellow OUT CEILING line on the output waveform to confirm the signal never crosses it.
Lookahead
Lookahead is not a continuously adjustable control here, just an on/off toggle, but it's the single feature that most defines whether a limiter behaves like a true "brickwall" or not. With it off, the limiter can only react to a peak after it has already happened, so extremely fast transients can very briefly exceed the ceiling before the gain reduction catches up — a real overshoot, not just a rounding artifact, as you can see by toggling it. With it on, the tool looks ahead in the loaded audio and starts reducing gain slightly before the peak arrives, so the ceiling is never crossed.
Where to start: leave it on for accurate, textbook brickwall behavior — that's also the default here. Turn it off specifically to study what a limiter without lookahead does differently, which is the whole reason this toggle exists on an educational tool like this one.
